How to Use ChatGPT as a Writer

Oh no, writer's block!

You need to produce content to drive traffic, but you can't seem to think of where to start!

So you decide to open up ChatGPT and add your topic: "How to Use ChatGPT as a Writer." Instantly, you see the text generated before your eyes. You marvel, "Wow, that's incredible (and crazy)!" It just produced what would have taken me hours of research to compile. But then, a wave of doubt washes over you, known as 'AI Guilt'.

Should I publish it or not?

You read the words, and they don't seem to resonate.

Why would a reader want to read a piece that the writer doesn't even want to write?

This might be a common sentiment as AI tools become more integrated into our daily workflow.

And because of this guilt, you decide to uphold your integrity and vow never to use this powerful tool again.

... But wait a moment.

As a writer myself, I understand this dilemma. However, I'm here to show you another perspective.

Tools are just tools. They are what we make of them. We should view them as a natural progression of technology. In the past, people wrote with quills dipped in ink. Now, we type on modern computers with auto-correct and other aids. Likewise, we should see how AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can assist us.

We can view the integration of technology as a means of democratizing resources for individuals—support that was once only accessible to the well-equipped. In the realm of big editorial teams, the presence of numerous team members—from researchers to editors—facilitates rapid content production.

However, solo writers historically had to juggle all these roles alone. With the advent of AI tools like ChatGPT, the landscape has shifted significantly. For about $20 a month, it's akin to hiring a team of assistants. This allows writers, even those working solo or in small teams, to produce high-quality content more efficiently. What were once insurmountable physical limitations are now easily overcome through digital assistance.

Consider this analogy: using AI in writing is like upgrading to a faster, more polished car. It's not fully autonomous, but you're still firmly in control. You navigate and make adjustments as needed, though now you benefit from enhanced features like cruise control. This helps streamline your journey without taking away your command of the vehicle.

Now, let's dive into how you, as a writer, can leverage ChatGPT.

A writer in his flow state

1. Brainstorm

Scenario 1: Refining a Topic

If you have a topic in mind but are unsure how to scope it or what points to consider, drop your idea into ChatGPT and request an outline. Engage in a dialogue with it—state what you like or dislike, refining your content.

Scenario 2: Generating Ideas

If you find yourself unsure about what to write, there's no need to worry. ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in such situations. For instance, if you're tasked with creating a newsletter focused on a specific topic but are unsure where to start, simply provide ChatGPT with the context of the topics or ideas you're considering. Ask it to generate a list of the top 10 ideas. From this list, select one that resonates with you as a starting point. Then, refer back to the techniques discussed in the previous scenario to develop a detailed outline..

2. Research

Now that we have a clear idea of what we’re going to write about, it’s time to dive deeper into each of the subtopics. Researching subjects that are somewhat unfamiliar can be challenging. Traditionally, this would involve hours spent poring over industry reports, scholarly articles, news pieces, and even multimedia content like YouTube videos—a tedious and time-consuming process.

ChatGPT can facilitate this task as well. However, while it's useful, it isn't foolproof. There may be instances of inaccuracies or 'hallucinations' where it generates incorrect information or cites non-existent sources. It's crucial to verify its outputs. To enhance accuracy, you can prompt it to 'cite sources extensively,' allowing models with internet browsing capabilities to provide direct links to their information sources.

On a personal note, I prefer using Perplexity.ai for my research. It offers a user-friendly interface that feels like a supercharged version of Google Search, making it a valuable tool for efficient and effective research. It’s definitely worth exploring if you’re looking for robust research tools.

3. Writing & Editing

Typically, my initial approach to writing involves typing freely to express my thoughts as swiftly and fluidly as possible, without worrying about grammar or diction. This method helps me overcome any linguistic barriers and allows my ideas to flow uninterrupted, although it often results in a draft full of grammatical mistakes and poorly structured sentences.

My next step is to input this rough draft into ChatGPT. I ask it to refine the text, smoothing out any errors made as my thoughts raced faster than my fingers could type. This process begins to shape the draft into a coherent piece.

I then use ChatGPT as a critical reviewer, soliciting feedback on areas for improvement. For instance, it might suggest where explanations could be clearer or where additional examples are needed. This feedback is invaluable as it helps me refine and enhance the article.

With these revisions, my article approaches its final form, readying it for publication.

Tip: When working with ChatGPT, you can request that it bolds any changes it makes. This allows you to quickly review what has been altered and retain control over the final draft.

4. Finishing Touch

If you're reading this guide on "How to Use ChatGPT as a Writer," it's likely that you publish your writing online. Every author aims to reach an audience and make an impact with their hard work. This goal necessitates optimizing your content for the online environment through effective search engine optimization (SEO).

Key SEO Strategies with ChatGPT:

  • Optimizing Keywords: Consider telling ChatGPT, "I need to optimize my article with keywords related to 'writing with ChatGPT' and 'ChatGPT writer'." This instruction can help align your content with relevant search queries, enhancing its visibility.

  • Generating a Meta Description: The meta description is a brief summary that appears under your page title in search results. Use ChatGPT to craft a concise overview that highlights the main points of your article. A compelling meta description can improve your page's ranking and encourage more clicks from potential readers.

  • Crafting the Title: The title is the first thing a reader sees and one of the most critical elements of your content. It should be eye-catching yet tasteful. ChatGPT can generate a list of the top 10 potential titles for your piece. Review these options and choose the one that most effectively captures the essence of your article and draws attention.

With these final adjustments, your article is not just complete—it's ready to stand out. You've transformed from an aspiring writer to a proficient content creator with the help of ChatGPT.

A happy writer

Final Tips and Tricks:

  • Pick your AI Tools: The AI landscape is highly competitive, and various AI tools are readily available for us to utilize. Experiment with different tools to discover which ones best suit specific tasks. Each language model, or LLM, has its own unique "personality" and nuances in how it interprets and executes tasks. So, take the time to explore these tools and identify which features align with your needs and which don't.

  • Treat ChatGPT as a copilot: While ChatGPT is incredibly powerful, don’t expect it to produce a masterpiece on its own. It's better thought of as a collaborative tool that enhances your efforts.

  • Learn Prompt Engineering: Another key area to explore is prompt engineering. Understanding how to effectively communicate with AI through prompts is crucial and can drastically improve the utility you derive from these tools.
